Good Practice Scheme phase three Sierra Leone

Country overview

Sierra Leone is situated between Guinea and Liberia on the west coast of Africa.  It has an estimated population of 6,144,562 (2007)covering a land area of 71,740 sq km.

From 1991 - 2002 Sierra Leone was dominated by a civil war resulting in the constitution being suspended for the majority of that time period.  For most of the people of Sierra Leone, local government is new.  The most recent deomcratic local government elections took place in 2004 after a gap of over thirty years.

Country theme: Waste disposal and management

Efforts are being made to sensitise people in Sierra Leone about the roles and responsibilties of local government, and also to build capacity to plan, manage and deliver local services.  There are a number of long-standing links between communities in Sierra Leone and those in the UK.  Participating communities are keen to expand these partnerships to include local councils in order to help develop capacity to improve local service delivery and decentralisation in Sierra Leone.  The theme for Phase 3 is waste disposal and management, which ties in effectively with the key priorities of the Sierra Leone government.
